Hop to It! Local and Micro Brewed Beer, the Sustainable Choice (While Over the Age of 21)

Klerifying Fact – Ancient Egyptians used beer for 100 medicinal uses.

Are you suffering from cenosillicaphobia? That’s the fear of an empty beer glass. If so, you can address your fear with a more sustainable local beer! Micro, craft breweries are blossoming across the nation returning America to its roots as a diverse nation of local brewers. There are currently over 5,300 breweries in the USA.

Big Beer Empire Strikes Back

With erosion of market share, big beer (eg ABInbev, which owns numerous brands including Budweiser, Bud Lite, Miller Lite, and Stella Artois) is buying craft breweries like Breckenridge and Goose Island. It’s also using its size to purchase as many hops as it can find. This mass purchasing threatens the ability of local, independently owned craft brews to purchase hops for their beer. These local beers tend to be better for you, your economy, and the environment. The ABInbev brands are owned by a private equity company based in Brazil, who don’t like to share their money.

Micro and Local, More Sustainable, and Helping Farmers

Increasingly, micro-brewers are partnering with local farmers to source hops. This helps farmers grow sustainable ingredients and brewers to know where their hops grow. This partnership with fully transparent supply chains enables you as the buyer to know that you’re supporting your local economy by supporting industrial jobs at the brewery and rural jobs on the farm.

Not all breweries are doing this yet, but they are starting to. That is a good thing for your local economy. As a rule of thumb, local businesses contribute 70% more, to the local economy, on average than multinational big brands.

On top of all this some micro-breweries use only renewable energy to keep you hydrated making their beer even more sustainable.
