As the dust from the harvest and election settles, Klerify recommends you sit with friends and family to break sustainable bread for a future with more love and kindness. Eating with someone will also reduce the amount of crumbs you would have spilled in your keyboard if you were writing that impassioned response to a Facebook stranger who will never agree with you.

Did you know that choosing wheat bread over white bread reduces your carbon footprint because it reduces the energy used to process the wheat? Additionally, not toasting saves under 25% of the carbon emissions in the life of a slice.

Also, growing wheat uses less water than other grains, and supports country town economies across America!

 

What are the impacts to the world, then? Amber waves of pesticide coated grains

Bread’s main ingredient is wheat. Most U.S. grown wheat is from the Great Plains which boasts a dry climate. The good thing about wheat is that it uses very little water. YAY – environmental win. The bad thing about wheat is that it is the recipient of 4.5% of all pesticides used in the U.S. BOO – humanity loss. The real bummer about the amount of  pesticides used by the U.S. wheat industry is that it continues to be on the rise – in fact, it increased by nearly 400% between 1960 and

 

2008.  Yikes!

 

Pesticides stay right where you spray them, right?

 

The 8-ball says – try again!  Too often, pesticides leave the fields and end up in our lakes, rivers, and aquifers – which means pesticides enter into our drinking water supply and the places we fish and swim.

 

As if that isn’t enough to make you go “hmmm,”  it now appears that some pesticides stay with the wheat as it becomes bread. A study in United Kingdom found that 60% of the bread loaves had pesticides! That means that we might be enjoying peanut butter and jelly with our least favorite pesticides like 2,4D and Bromoxynil octanoate – just some cancerous pesticides it’s probably advisable to avoid. Statistically, government studies say that pesticides in certain foods are within a reasonable risk to human health, but hey, do you want to take a “reasonable risk” with carcinogens?
