Product of the Week: Beef burgers!

July 3, 2016

The smoke emanating from the grill is the unmistakable symbol of freedom on the Fourth of July! The sizzle of beef fat is the sound of environmental and social problems in our food system.

What’s the impact?!?

Beef production in the conventional sense is pretty nasty, causing water pollution from the manure and urine at feedlots where the cattle are not always treated humanely.

Additionally, beef cause a lot of greenhouse gas emissions (the most of any food you eat. Globally, beef farming is a leading cause of deforestation and loss of prairies and grasslands – places where you like to vacation! It typically takes 10 pounds of feed to make one pound of beef, so your quarter pounder is actually a 2.5 pounder!

What can I do?

Give the planet and the cows a bit more freedom this Fourth, have an Organic or American Grassfed Certified beef or one from a cow grown without hormones or antibiotics.

And it you feel the need for a second patty, go with a veggie burger (preferably organic), and you’ll roughly have 1/10 th the impact on the world as a beef burger.

Don’t believe us, listen to The Terminator:

Even Business Insider thought this was interesting:
