Product of the Week: Popcorn

Popcorn and Pesticides…Yuck!

Popcorn, that healthy, low-cal filling snack that’s popping off the shelves at grocery stores and not just at movie theaters has some disturbing impacts on the environment that may hurt your health, too!

The simple snacking pleasure packs a bigger punch than you might think from each puffy kernel!

The deforestation and abuse in some popcorn:

Many popcorn brands like Pop Secret, has unsustainable palm oil in its supply chain that too often involves forced labor, land tenure violations, and unsafe working conditions. Palm oil is also a leading cause of deforestation. Make sure you buy from a brand that is RSPO certified or buys 100% RSPO Credits.

Take the sting out of popcorn:

Corn farming in the USA is a leading use of dangerous pesticides, including neonicitinoids, which are linked to bee colony collapse. Some brands have committed to eliminate them from their sourcing. Even if they do that, there are lots of really dangerous pesticides out there in conventional corn farming that can harm you, such as organophosphates.

Cleaner popcorn for cleaner water:

Non-GMO is not enough. Make sure you’re buying USDA Organic certified. Corn production in the USA is a leading cause of water pollution from pesticides, fertilizers, and soil erosion. Pesticides like atrazine, which are banned in many parts of the world can cause significant harm to fish and other creatures that live in the water. Nitrogen fertilizer causes dead zones in local lakes and the Gulf of Mexico that kills aquatic life.

Make your popcorn a healthier snack for you and the planet and buy Organic brands or tell your favorite brands to get Organic, and fast!
